Banoffee pie of Red Ribbon

Its funny how a lot of people mistake "banoffee" as being made up of banana and coffee. I can only say that it is primarily due to how the word banoffee is pronounced that is causing this confusion.

Banoffee is actually a dessert made of bananas, cream and toffee on a base made of pastry or crumbs of graham or biscuits. That is the foundation of the delicious dessert but can be enhanced to contain nuts, chocolate, or yes, even coffee. So the term Banoffee is really a word combined from "banana" and "toffee". If only people here pronounced it correctly as banofi rather than banowfi. Even the Red Ribbon commercial says it incorrectly.

Red Ribbon’s Banoffee Pie is true to its name. It is made of bananas, cream and toffee filling over a pie base made of crushed graham crackers. That alone is scrumptious enough for anyone’s palate. But they added more to the basics to stamp it with the Red Ribbon taste. The filling was made of bananas, nuts, toffee and chocolate. The whipped cream was drizzled with caramel and chocolate syrup. Yummm.

It is so delicious, my hubby crowed like a rooster after the first bite. Personally, I love the touch of chocolate and nuts as it dampened the sweetness brought about by the toffee filling. The 9-inch pie will set you back about Php520 but it is worth every bite.

if you do a little research you will discover that the original banoffee recipe was made with instant coffee blended with the whipped cream and sprinkled on top.(the original recipe can be found here: http://www.hungrymonk.co.uk/pages/banoffi.htm)
and technically speaking, it’s caramel, not toffee, that is used in the pie. toffee is crunchy while caramel is soft and creamy… so it would be correct to say that banoffee is made up of banana and coffee…
since you were pointing out the mistakes of others, thought you wouldn’t mind being corrected about incorrectly correcting others…

you should also try the banoffee pie at banapple in katipunan. it kicks red ribbons butt…. banapple was serving banoffee before it even came out in red ribbon and starbucks.

cakelover – Thanks for the detailed information but I am not sure why you pointed out that coffee was included in the original recipe? Even if coffee was included as an ingredient, it still is not the reason why the pie is called Banoffee.

There is technically also a very thin line in the differences between caramel and toffee (or fudge and butterscotch for that matter) so to say it is made of caramel instead of toffee is not entirely accurate especially when the Hungry Monk restaurant calls what they use “toffee filling” and not caramel filling.

Toffee is generally made hard, brittle or crunchy but not always. Some prefer to make toffee that are of the chewy kind (similar to caramels).

I would also like to clarify what you are attempting to correct me for? Is it my list of ingredients of this historical pie? I don’t think I was incorrect there. if it was in my correcting the pronunciation of the word “toffee” by the people I come to meet or talk to, then I stand by that because it is incorrect to say TOWFEE when it should not be pronounced as such.

Thanks for enlightening us though. :)

cakelover – I haven’t tried the Banapple’s version of the banoffee pie but have heard good feedback on those who have. Considering that I am already floored with Red Ribbon’s version, I expect I will be blown away by Banapple’s offering. Cheers!
