Fruits in Ice Cream

The past few days have been extremely hot. The heat has been unbearable like it was summer all over again. What is worse though, is that the heat comes with humidity. And boy has it been so wet and so humid that even standing still will make you sweat.

And heat will only make me think of one thing… ice cream!

I love ice cream and this can be attributed to my love for all things cold. Like an ice cold drink. I try not to drink any beverage that is not iced. So it would only be natural for me to love ice cream.

My favorite ice cream flavors are: Selecta’s Super Chocolate and Coffee Crumble, Haagen Dazs’ Strawberry and Triple Chocolate, Ben and Jerry’s Chunky Monkey and Phish food and Dreyer’s Double Fudge Brownie. I’m salivating just thinking about them. I think I’m craving for some ice cream right now.

My least favorite brand of ice cream was the one previously known as Presto ice cream. It wasn’t about the taste. It just somehow tasted like some creamy dessert that wasn’t cold at all. But that’s just me.

I was pitifully looking at the ice cream freezer at the grocery the other day as it was another very humid afternoon. Looking for a sign that I was meant to buy ice cream, I perused the variety on sale.

A new gallon of ice cream jumped out at me. I was familiar with the brand but I never thought they sold them in gallons at the grocery. I have never tried their brand because I have never passed a stall in my trips to the mall. Now that’s a sign. It was begging to be bought. I couldn’t find a flavor that I wanted to try. They had cookies and cream, mango, vanilla, raspberry and macapuno. I looked at the list of flavors displayed on the glass cover of the freezer and read that there was tsokolate. I dug through gallons of ice cream before finding my destiny – the Fruits in Ice Cream tsokolate flavor.

Not expecting much but a very cold dessert, I was surprised with the taste of dark chocolate ice cream. Usually chocolate flavored ice cream would have a mild chocolate flavor that bordered on milky chocolate. FIC’s tsokolate had semi sweet aftertaste that lingers in your mouth making you crave for more. It is best served with slices of cavendish whose sweetness will complement the taste of the chocolate.

I am excited about finding this new flavor. Next time, I think I want to try the raspberry. If its half as good as the tsokolate, then I will forever be a fan.

hi apples. it’s refreshing to see my favorite ice cream brand (FIC, which i like to introduce to foreign guests as “the haagen dazs of the philippines” ;) ) here in your blog, esp now that, as you say, the weather is strangely hot and humid. like HD, they also get only the best sources for their chocolates, strawberries, etc. it’s also nice to know that this pinoy brand is being served to very discerning passengers in JAL flights and enjoyed elsewhere in the world. thanks too for giving me a reason to go back to people’s palace. can’t wait to try those delicious and healthful-sounding spring rolls!

christine – Hey there! Hope youre doing great! Isn’t FIC truly great. Its unfortunate that I was only able to try it out recently. I could have been enjoying this for months. My loss. I read about the company in their website and really admire how it has been accepted internationally because of the quality it has.

i’m great, thanks! just been catching up on everyone’s blogs ;) not a loss at all, as they say better late than never! if it were not for the magazine interview, i wouldn’t have known about FIC. the company’s pretty inspiring, isn’t it? i love their strawberry, chocolate, nangkasuy! (not sure if it’s still around though) and their lite selections. try them all and i’ll read about it!

also, i forgot ask: where can i buy good kuhol? haven’t eaten these in ages nor have i ever tried cooking them (gulp). if you don’t mind, may i ask for your mom’s or your recipe? :)

  5. |

christine – Our family buys kuhol at the Cainta Public Market. That is the only place I know right now where they sell it. Im sure they have it somewhere else. But they dont have it at Kalentong market and at Edsa Central so since those are the two I am nearest to, I am unable to cook them at home and have to settle for my mom’s cooking. I will email you my mom’s recipe. Hope you like it.

I like Fruits and Ice Cream too. My favorite flavors are Cappuccino and Langkasoy. For a while I got addicted to Selecta’s ChocNut. What I want to try is Sebastian’s Ice Cream featured in Table for Three, Please.

  7. |

Em Dy – I heard about the ChocNut flavor but I havent seen it sold anywhere. I would also like to try to try Sebastian’s and Gelatone. Maybe soon and you might just read about it. :)

apples, ill find a way to get those things in cainta then. thanks in advance for the recipe — really appreciate it!

  9. |

christine – I do hope you find them at another place. After that you can share it to me so I wouldn’t have to travel all the way to Cainta. Hehe. I sent you the recipe via email. Enjoy!

  10. |

me too– cainta is far nga :( sige will definitely let you know. got your email and replied na ;) meantime, enjoy your new ice cream discovery!

hey thanks for passing by my page…god i love ice cream.. i cant resist them…

  12. |

sha – I can tell ;) I love ice cream too. Great site youve got there.

Never have tried FIC although my wife already had. That is one of the perks of being employed as a tenancy coordinator in a mall, you have lots of freebies and get free food sampling.

I am not much of an ice cream fan, but I would recommend the Arce brand. They have some flavors that are unique to their brand and would make the casual “tsokolate or keso” types think twice. But I love their avocado ice cream. And the price is also a plus. :)

    ciao!

  14. |

Erin – I love freebies. Maybe I should try becoming a tenancy coordinator in a mall. PM’ing is just too stressful. Hehe.

I tried Arce before but I cant recall anymore how it tasted. Gives me a reason to try it again. hehe. :D

  15. |

same here, last time i bought a pint was when i was still in college and living in quezon city. i haven’t seen any selling arce ice creams where i live but im pretty sure they are still in circulation since i see their logo in some places.

    ciao!

  16. |

Erin – You were still in college? Arce has been in existence for THAT long? Hehe kidding! :)

  17. |

harharhar. that makes arce at least 8 years old, thank you. :P

my brother and cousins usually frequent the ACA video rental in sfdm (beside the FPJ studio) and i usually buy my pint of arce ice cream on the occupant of the next building slot.

    ciao!

  18. |

Apples H and Erin, Arce Dairy has a stall in ShangriLa Mall right across Healthy Options. Mahal nga lang per scoop.

  19. |

thanks em, unfortunately i dont frequent shangrila. mid-C class lang ako so hanggang megamall lang. :)

will try to get some arce ice cream if i do happen to pass the area. i imagine the rent of the stall has something to do with the increase in price. :(

    ciao!

  20. |

ice cream is good but there’s something else that i think of when it’s hot and humid…s**

    thank heavens for airconditioning…or not?

  21. |

    Erin – wow ang drama… hehe…

  22. |

bryan.. better with ice cream ;)

  23. |

my ice cream fves are– haagen Daz– dulce de leche
    BTIC– bubble gum
    FIC– strawberry

  24. |

Jeff – Dulce de Leche is delicious! One of my faves too regardless if its Haagen Daz or Dreyer’s. I am not much a fan of bubble gum so I choose BTIC’s chocolate flavored ice creams.

  25. |

    Ditto with Selecta’s Coffee Crumble!

But we are basically an FIC family. My kids LOVE the raspberry flavor so try it out.soon. As for me, I am a durian lover and their durian ice cream is THE BEST SO FAR!!!!! And yes, I love their super tsokolate ice cream too!

I will pass on some cakes but give me ice cream any time! :-)

  26. |

This ice cream sounds delicious. I have never seeen tsokolate ice cream, but then again I live in Seattle :-)

I also love seasonal ice creams that come out just for part of the year, like pumpkin ice cream or apple spice ice cream which only come around in the autumn. Ice cream is great year round of course.

  27. |

Cakespy – I must say I cannot imagine myself having pumpkin ice cream. Its difficult for me to imagine pumpkin as a dessert. I would love to have a taste of apple spice though. Would that be similar to eating frozen apple pie? :)

  28. |

theres apple ice cream at nestle creamery in aurora blvd.

  29. |

Jeff – Hmm I haven’t been there in a while. I vaguely remember a field trip there when I was in gradeschool but.. I could be dreaming. :)

  30. |

i love FIC’s raspberry ice cream!

  31. |

u8mypinkcookies – I love the rasperry too. Its only a couple of weeks ago that I was able to try it. :) Love your nick too. Pink and cookies! :-D
